Two Months in China: What I Learned at the Heart of the Brewing and Manufacturing Industry

Raphaël Dionne
Two months in China, the brewing and manufacturing industry

At 21, I had the chance to spend a full immersion in China as part of my work at Group NDL. Over more than two months, I visited 25 partner factories, met suppliers, watched manufacturing processes up close, and above all, understood from the inside the real dynamics of international industrial sourcing.

For a real-world example seen through an engineer's eyes, also read “The real face of industrial Asia…”.

But that is not all.

I also spent several days at the NDL CRAFT plant, our division specialized in brewing equipment. There, I saw how turnkey breweries come to life, how brewing systems designed specifically for microbreweries back home are assembled, welded, tested and optimized.

A first real immersion

This trip left its mark on me. I saw with my own eyes highly technological facilities and spotless production lines, but also the realities on the ground: cultural differences, communication that is sometimes complex, technical adjustments. And that is exactly why having an experienced local team on site changes everything.

Group NDL, with more than 300 direct employees in Asia, is exactly that: eyes, hands and a strategic mind close to the suppliers. It makes all the difference.

The brewing world, seen from Asia

At NDL CRAFT, I worked on several brewing system projects. It is not just stainless steel and piping. It is rigour in assembly, precision in pressure, an understanding of the final product: beer. What I saw there really opened my eyes to the reality of brewers, and to the technical requirements a good system has to meet to deliver consistency, safety and quality.

I talked about it recently in an interview with the media outlet Baron Mag, on their podcast Les Affaires Brassicoles. We discuss my field experience, brewing trends in Asia and how we build brewing systems designed for craft brewers here at home.

What I take away from it

What this experience taught me is that international sourcing, especially in sensitive fields like food processing or brewing production systems, cannot be improvised.

It is not only a question of price.

It is precision mechanics. Every detail counts: the right communication, the right tolerances, the right materials, the right partner. And when everything is properly managed, the result shows: projects that work, satisfied clients, and real value delivered.
